Jepretan fotografi makro dari Indonesia tergolong unggul karena fotografernya berani terjun ke tengah ilalang. Sementara fotografer luar negeri lebih banyak bereksperimen di studio. Indonesia juga unggul karena keragaman serangganya yang unik dan tidak ditemui di belahan dunia lain. ”Jangan sampai menyiksa binatang. Sekali melakukan, selamanya tidak akan dapat momen bagus,” ujar Andiyan Lutfi.

Saat ini, situs fotografi makro internasional sedang menggandrungi potret semut. Beberapa kali Andiyan pun memenangi kejuaraan fotografi makro dengan mengusung gambar semut. Foto karyanya berjudul Ration yang memotret aktivitas semut mengangkat remah brownies menang di ajang Sony Award. Foto semut lain miliknya juga menyabet juara pertama Photographer of the Year di Inggris.

Sayangnya, hasil jepretan fotografi makro di Indonesia belum mendapat apresiasi layak dari segi materi. Tapi, hal ini tak menyurutkan minat pencinta fotografi makro untuk berkarya. Tingginya minat pada fotografi makro, antara lain, tecermin dari semakin lakunya penjualan lensa makro.

Lensa makro didesain berbeda dari lensa kamera biasa berharga Rp 3,5 juta hingga Rp 15 juta. Semakin panjang jangkauan lensa dan semakin rendah rentang diafragmanya, semakin mahal harga lensa makro tersebut. ”Sengaja beli kamera dan lensa terbaik agar hasilnya maksimal,” kata Sofi Sugiharto sambil menunjukkan hasil jepretan serangganya yang sangat tajam.

Bagi pencinta fotografi makro dengan dana terbatas, gambar serangga bisa diperoleh dengan menambah filter close up seharga Rp 300.000-Rp 500.000 pada lensa kamera biasa. Pembesaran dengan lensa kamera biasa juga bisa diperoleh dengan membalik lensa menggunakan alat seharga Rp 150.000.

Namun, hasil jepretan dengan alat-alat tersebut umumnya memiliki ruang ketajaman yang lebih sempit. ”Karena kualitas hasilnya tak sebanding dengan lensa makro, penggemar fotografi makro sebisa mungkin pasti membeli lensa makro meski mahal,” tambah Andiyan.

Dalam fotografi digital saat ini, format medium sudah menjadi batas atas. Dulu, di zaman fotografi analog, format medium dinamakan demikian kareana dia menjadi penengah. Di atasnya ada format besar dan di bawahnya ada format 135 serta format-format kecil lain.

Dalam dunia fotografi analog, ukuran film mempengaruhi mutu gambar. Memang, mutu film semakin baik sejalan dengan waktu. AKan tetapi, pada awal tahun 2000-an peningkatan mutu film harus dihentikan karena era digtal sudah datang dan tak terbendung lagi.

Pada era digital ini, dalam sepuluh tahun terakhir, perkembangan mutu peralatan fotografi sangat cepat. Kalau pada tahun 1997 kamera digital untuk professional hanya berkapasitas rekam 1 megapiksel, kini telepon saku pun sudah ada yang berkamera 14 megapiksel.

Dalam dunia fotografi komersial, ukuran megapiksel seringa menjadi tolok ukur mutu. Kehalusan detail selalu menjadi hal yang dikejar dan dicari.

Memang, format 135 yang saat ini paling banyak dianut sudah mampu mencapai 20-an megapiksel. Untuk fotografi komersial tingkat iklan majalah, format 135 masih bisa sangat berjaya. Namun, untuk fotografi komersial pada tingkat yang lebih tinggi untuk poster-poster besar atau kertas dinding (wallpaper), misalnya, dibutuhkan format fotografi yang lebih besar. Dan disinilah peran format medium dibutuhkan.

Punahnya Format Besar

Dalam era digital, format besar memang "dimatikan" dengan cepat. Dia sempat ada, tapi dengan harga sangat mahal. Ukuran sensor yang sangat besar tak mudah dibuat dan pasti menjadi terlalu mahal karean kelangkaannya. Fotografi digital dengan format besar tidak menarik karena sangat tidak ekonomis.

Memang kemampuan field camera atau kamera format besar sulit ditandingi. Dan sampai sekarang pun kamera format besar masih dipakai, tapi sensor yagn merekam gambar hanyalah format medium saja, bukan format yang memenuhi total bidang rekamannya.

para produsen kamera digital kemudian "menggenjot" perkembangan format medium sehingga kini menjadi batas atas fotografi, dan tampaknya ini akan bertahan sampai beberapa belas tahun lagi.

Dalam era fotografi analog, persaingan di format medium relatif hanya terjadi pada tiga merek, yaitu Hasselblad, Mamiya, dan Rolleifex. Hanya tiga merek ini yang bersaing ketat.

Di era fotografi digital, ada perubahan sistem. Kamera lama tetap bisa dipakai, tapi dengan mengganti magasin filmnya dengan digital back. Di awal era digital, persaingan kemudian terjadi pada dua merek digital back, yaitu Leaf dan PhaseOne.

Kedua merek ini bisa dipasangkan pada kamera format medium, umumnya dengan dudukan mamiya atau Hasselblad. Namun, saat ini perubahan total sudah terjadi lagi. PhaseOne sudah membuat kamera sendiri dengan adaptasi total dari kamera mamiya format 645, kemudian PhaseOne juga mengakuisisi mamiya dan Leaf. Di pihak lain, hasselblad juga langsung membuat kamera digital sendiri.

Saat ini persaingan di format medium hanya berlangsung antara PhaseOne yang punya tiga merek digital back di dalamnya (PhaseOne, Maiya, dan Leaf) dan Hasselblad sendirian.

Bulan lalu, Klinik Fotografi mencoba digital back Mamiya DM-33 yang berkapasitas 33 megapiksel dengan hasil yang ada dihalam ini. Pemotretan dilakukan di Prima Imaging Studio di Kemayoran, dengan model Manda Hartawan.

Lampu-lampu yang dipakai adalah set Broncolor. Hasil uji coba menunjukkan hasil yang memuaskan dalam segi kematangan warna, kehalusan detail, serta rentang dinamikanya. Dominasi PhaseOne memang begitu kuat saat ini. Namun, yang jadi pertanyaan, mungkinkah nama-nama Leaf, Mamiya, dan PhaseOne akan jadi satu nama saja?
