JUSTIN MOTT UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

#CANON 5D MARK III
Cameracanon.blogspot.com – The Jakarta Post February 18, 2015 by Hans David Tampubolon|Jakarta – AWARD-WINNING photographer Justin Mott remembers fondly the day he feel in love with photography and deiced to shift his passion from writing to taking high quality, intimate photos.
“My family all chipped in and bought me a digital camera. So for my birthday, they all paid a little bit of money back then,” he told The Jakarta Post recently when he came to town.
“It must have been 2002 or 2001. I got my first digital camera and I used my free time on Saturdays and Sundays walking around San Francisco doing street photography.”
Now, more than a decade later, Mott, who was born in 1978 in Rhode Island, US, has become one of the world’s most well-known photographers, both for his photo journalism and commercial work.
Most said great photographers spent lots of time with their subjects to really capture them. Once, he spent six years documenting the life of an agent orange victim, a project of which he is truly proud.
His weapon of choice for photography mirrors his philosophy – he isn’t a fan of taking photographs using zoom lenses. Instead, he’d rather be as close as possible to this subject.
CANON 5D MARK III
I use a Canon 5D Mark III and I use all prime lenses, so it depends on the shoot. I shoot videos with it too. If I’m going on an editorial assignment, I might just take a fix 14.14.
If I’m on a wedding shoot, I’ll take more lenses because I have more time. I use prime lenses from the 17 tilt shift to the 24. My favorite lens is the Canon 35 1.4. I spent an entire year just shooting with that lens. It’s the prime lens for me, it makes me move.
Zoom lenses can make you be a lazy photographer so when I go out, this lens makes me move around and really captures the objects. The quality is amazing.
APPS
I use Lightroom. Lightroom is so powerful now. A couple of years ago, it wasn’t but [now] I can do everything I need with my photography with it.
Around 90 percent of editing I do with Lightroom. I use it for commercial jobs, wehre we have to move things or add things. A lot of my photography is natural so there is not a lot of post production. Sometimes I use Photoshop.
